Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir state police is gearing up for a larger role in dealing with crimes related to ragging, corruption or even militancy even as the Centre mulls withdrawal of troops from the region.
A new service launched on Tuesday by the state police allows the public to file complaints and register FIRs via SMS to police number 9469 300 300.
Starting this week, the Jammu Police is now just a text-message away.
The Jammu police along with National Informatics Centre has developed a software to receive complaints on the police number. And with a response time of five minute, the services aims to make the police more accessible to the public.
IGP, Jammu Ashok Gupta said, “We find that public are reluctant to come to police station due to traditional hesitations and as our lifestyles goes, people are short of time.”
In 2009, the state police started its own anti-terrorist squad and also is raising five new battalions, perhaps readying the ground for the Centre's troop withdrawal initiative.
