Srinagar: In the latest development in the Jammu and Kashmir exam scandal, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has kept the Education ministry portfolio to himself. The move by the Chief Minister came after State education Minister Peerzada Sayeed sent in his resignation over the examgate scandal.
Peerzada resigned on Friday following accusations that he used the state education department officials to help his son pass Class 10th board exams.
However, Omar clarified that Peerzada had resigned only as the Education Minister, and would continue to be the Public Enterprise Minister.
"Peerzada continues to be a minister. His school education ministry portfolio has been taken away, but he remains the public enterprise minister," said Omar.
Peerzada 's son had scored a distinction in his Class XII exam, something which protestors and the Opposition said, was highly suspicious and demanded his resignation.
"I have resigned from the council of ministers. I have forwarded my resignation to the party high command", said Peerzada after submitting his resignation.
"It is their decision now to decide on it. I do not want to create problems for the party."
"As far as my statement to the media is concerned, I will call a press conference in a day or two and reveal all facts before the media", he added.
The Jammu and Kashmir crime branch report had said that there was prima facie evidence to show the involvement of officials of both the Board and Education department.
The report also pointed out that Sayeed's son was helped in his exams in more than two subjects in the 2009 class 10th board exams.
It also stated that a senior education officer even wrote his Urdu and Maths paper.
Shockingly, the report also revealed that just before the exams, the Board even facilitated his migration from one school to another so that a favourable centre could be assigned to him.
