Sumbal: Abdul Rehman Padroo, one of the five civilians killed in reported fake encounters, was buried in Sumbal in Kashmir.
Padroo was allegedly picked up and shot by the Ganderbal police after being branded as Abu Hamza, an LeT militant from Pakistan.
Even as forty other alleged militants lie buried in the graveyard in Sumbal, the residents now want to know if they were really militants.
"There have been several other burials in this very graveyard. All of their faces were unrecognisable. We don't know who these people really are. We have no choice but to believe the police version," says Guhlam Hasan Rather, a resident of Sumbal.
Kashmiris are clearly angry. Locals turned violent when Padroo's body was exhumed on Tuesday.
"When the main accused has admitted to have buried Padroo here and the victim has also been recognised by his father, I don't know why the Government is deferring action for the next three months," says Ali Mohammad Lone, another resident.
Based on media reports, the Army has ordered an inquiry into the alleged killings. But separatists have been quick to corner the Government on the issue of police brutality and human rights violations in the valley.
"How can the police investigate the case without bias when they themselves have been accused of committing these atrocities," says All-Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
