Shopian case: J-K delays action against men

Srinagar: A CBI report has blamed six lawyers, five doctors and two civilians for allegedly subverting the truth and intimidating witnesses to depose against police and security personnel in connection with the deaths of two women in Shopian in May this year. It says the 13 people must be summoned and tried according to law.

But state government which earlier acted under public pressure and arrested four policemen including the SP of Shopian now finds itself in a difficult position. It fears a violent public backlash if it goes ahead and arrests the 13 people named in the CBI report.

There were widespread protests in Shopian after the same CBI report gave the accused police personnel a clean chit.

Though, the CBI report has come under severe criticism from the victim’s family, people of Shopian and separatist bodies, the J-K government has maintained a studied silence about the report.

It has steered clear of the Shopian controversy by neither accepting nor rejecting the report by saying the case is still in court.

The Opposition PDP as well as women's groups have rejected the report. Independent Women Initiative for Justice too rejected the report.

“Whenever a crime occurs, a series of forensic, scientific, medical, circumstantial evidence leads to the accused but surprisingly evidence has been tampered,” member of IWIJ Vrinda Grover said.

The government has chosen to sidestep this issue. But for how long?
