Jammu: More than 450,000 government employees across Jammu and Kashmir Monday began a three-day strike demanding the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations in the state.
Work in the civil secretariat, educational institutions and medical services has came to a complete halt.
Nazir Mir, leader of the secretariat employees association, said the government was adopting delaying tactics.
“We were told that the Sixth Pay Commission report would be implemented as soon as the new government would take over and now we are being told that the government does not having money to implement the report. This is unfair and an injustice on us,” said Mir.
Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather has asked the employees to call off their strike and suggested that they should try to seek redressal through dialogue and bear with the government.
The government requires Rs.38 billion to implement the recommendations of the pay commission.
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has asked the government to immediately implement the report.
In a statement issued Monday, she said the “employees must get their rights”.
