J&K reverses order to poison stray dogs

New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to let the sleeping dogs rest up.

Two days ago, CNN-IBN reported the story of the Srinagar municipality deciding to poison stray dogs there to tackle the growing menace of dog bites and the spread of rabies.

But now after the report, the municipality has reversed the order. It has now chosen to sterilise nearly two lakh stray dogs in a phased manner.

While the medical fraternity in Srinagar was all for poisoning the dogs, animal rights activists, including Maneka Gandhi, alleged that the municipality was turning a blind eye to other options like castration.

According to the city’s municipal corporation, every six people have one dog in Srinagar. And an anti-rabies clinic at the city’s SMHS hospital sees around 3,500 dog bites every year.

Authorities are convinced that tough measures need to be taken. The municipal corporation had already bought Rs 20 lakh worth of drugs to poison the dogs.

On an average, a hospital sees more than 30-40 cases of dog bites every day.
