New Delhi: The elections in Jammu and Kashmir confirms people’s faith in democracy, said the Congress president and the Prime Minister on Sunday.
India’s neigbours must learn a lesson from the successful elections in the state, said Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a hint at Pakistan.
"It does not matter who wins, what matters is the people of the valley, people of Jammu and people of Jammu and Kashmir have expressed their faith in the democratic system. It is a lesson to be learnt by our neighbours," said Gandhi as early trends during the counting of votes in the state came in.
"From the very beginning, I wanted the election to be held on time. I am glad that it has," she said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had voted for “democracy”.
“The large turnout is a vote for democracy. It is a vote for national integration. Therefore, we are all happy," he said.
