Srinagar: The CRPF is pulling out 31 of its companies from the Kashmir Valley and the nod has come from the Union Home Ministry after its top brass sought permission to de-induct.
CRPF Kashmir PRO, Prabhakar Tripathi says, "Sixty of our battalions have been deployed for counter-insurgency operations. Maybe a few battalions from the city will also be withdrawn and deployed in the hinterland."
The first movement is out of Srinagar. Their place will be taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The CRPF will still be on standby to aid in counter-insurgency operations, but there is a proposal to gradually use more of paramilitary and police forces in place of the Army in the hinterland.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah says, "We have held discussions with the DGP and police top brass and it was decided that the police should come to the forefront and Central forces like CRPF and others should be there only to provide aid. We want to do this so that people can come into direct contact with police."
The police are planning to raise 15 battalions for the new roles and five battalions have already been recruited. They are also being given newer weapons.
By bringing the police to the forefront, at least in the city, the Chief Minister is trying to placate the people who have long since been demanding that the local police be made an interface between them and the government.
