Srinagar: With the Jammu-Srinagar highway closed, the Kashmir valley has been cut off from the rest of the country. The temperature is hovering at minus 6 degree Celsius and expected to fall further in the next few days. The power has been restored but only to Srinagar and some major townships.

As the mercury dips further in Kashmir, the woes of people especially those living in Muffassil areas have only multiplied. On the outskirts of Srinagar, Families has been cooking on an earthen stove for the last four days

A resident on outskirt of Srinagar Hafeeza said, "There is no power, no gas available and no facility, we are forced to cook in open."

This is the bleak side of the Kashmir winter story since gas is not easily available and there is no electricity, people have been literally pushed to stone age.

In the Kishtwar area of Jammu, heavy snow and power disruption has inspired business. Mohammed Rafi, a vendor, is earning Rs 20 with every phone battery and electronic appliance he charges using his generator.

"No power means that I find a new form of business and it is a paying one," Rafi said.

For the number of stranded commuters and truckers has been piling up for the last four days on the Jammu-Srinagar highway there's no immediate relief in sight. The met department says the temp will fall further in the next few days.
