Sopore: After a string of terrorist attacks, the state government on Wednesday announced a separate police chief for Sopore, upgrading the north Kashmir town and its suburbs to the level of a police district to ensure intensified security of the area.
Sopore town has seen a rise in militant violence and police-protestor clashes in the past two months.
The town has a history of anti-government protests and has seen an upward trend in militancy-related violence in recent days.
The state government has appointed Altaf Ahmad Khan as the first police chief of the newly carved out police district.
Last week, a policeman and a civilian died after guerrillas ambushed a patrol in Sopore, 54 km from Srinagar.
State police chief Kuldeep Khoda will formally inaugurate the police district in Sopore Thursday.
