London: More and more people in Britain are taking to drinking as they fear losing jobs in the wake of recession, a new survey has revealed.
According to the survey, a third of men and a fifth of women admit to "regularly" hitting the bottle to cope. Almost half of those said they had turned to alcohol in the past 18 months to cope with work-related stress.
One in eight said their drinking had soared as they were suffering clinical depression triggered by the economic crisis. Also one in five women admit their drinking has increased by almost 50 per cent over the recommended limit of two to three units a day as they fight to keep their jobs.
The YouGov poll quizzed 3,600 adults. It also found that more than a quarter of bosses know the boozing is going on, the Daily Express reported.
Phil Bell, from insurer RSA said, "Employers need to look at how they look after their staff so that they don't end up with a drunken workforce."
