Jodhpur: A section of Jodhpur's youth have decided to not celebrate Eid on Thursday in memory of those who died in the temple stampede at the Chamunda Devi temple early on Tuesday morning.
"Mazhab nahin sikhata, aapas mein beer karna (Religion does not preach hatered)," says Danish, a youth of Jodhpur.
Danish speaks of communal harmony, as a tribute to his Hindu friend who was killed in a stampede at Chamunda Devi temple on Tuesday.
A power failure at the popular shrine near Jodhpur sparked off a stampede, killing 130 people and injuring over 450 others.
At around 6:30 pm throngs of people came rushing down the temple's corridor, causing a terrible stampede.
As soon as news of the tragedy got out, young men rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital to help the victims.
Now, Danish and a group of young Muslims in one area of Jodhpur have decided that they will offer Namaz but will not celebrate Eid this year. They are appealing to other Muslims to observe Eid quietly as a mark of respect for their Hindu brethren.
"All communities have lived peacefully in Jodhpur. Now that this tragedy has occured, we stand with them," says Shikhar Ali, a resident of Jodhpur.
"Usually, Eid is a big affair. However, this year, we will not wear new clothes or celebrate it in a big way," says Shameer Khan another resident of Jodhpur.
The Rajasthan government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the relatives of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
While the monetary help is welcome for the hundreds struggling with their wounds in hospital, it is the smaller act of solidarity that is valued in a big way.
