Ahmedabad: An automobile business in Ahmedabad keeps Gopal Patel busy through the year. But Uttarayan, is when the sun ascends north, and when Gopal ascends to his rooftop.

Uttarayan, which is one of the most awaited festivals in Gujarat for kite enthusiasts, is the time to give Gopal passion a flight. With a deft lift and a swift pull, Gopal, who is a kite designer and his brother turn kite flying into a fine art.

"I have been making kites for the past 15-16 years,” says Gopal.

The kite club which Gopal floated four years ago, is today the Magan Hari Kite club that undertakes kite-making of all shapes and sizes ranging anywhere from five to 32 feet.

"I have tried many times. I have created a superman. I have tried making a kite like the NASA spaceship as well as B2, which is a bomber aircraft,” says Gopal.

And to be flying as high as the kite, the club members not only kick in with preparations six months in advance, they also spend thousands of rupees to launch their fantasy in an otherwise blue sky.

"It's the kind of satisfaction the scientists get after launching their space shuttle. That's how I feel like when our kite flies high in the sky, “says a Kite Club member, Anish Shah.
