New Delhi: It was supposed to be regular hearing of a review petition on the Mulayam SIngh Yadav disproportionate assets case. Instead it turned to be an emotion packed day at the Supreme Court.

Justice Lakshmanan broke down in open court while giving out details of an anonymous letter that questioned his integrity in the case. He later withdrew himself from the case.

While hearing the review petition, tears rolled down the cheeks of justice A R Lakshmanan, a judge with 17 years of judicial experience.

He expressed his inability to continue being a part of a bench looking into the case of disproportionate assets of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.

Justice Lakshmanan took this decision after disclosing that he had received an anonymous letter questioning his credibility.

In the open court, Lakshmanan expressed his dismay at the turn of events.

Opening his heart out to his fellow judge Justice Altamas Kabir, Lakshmanan said, “I am very much pained and disturbed by the letter. In the last 17-and-a-half years that I have served as a judge, I have never received such a letter. Me and my wife are so disturbed that I m unable to speak.”

“People who write anonymous letters are cowards. They don't want to show who they are, make reckless allegations – it is a common practice, it happens every time. Lots of judges get these kinds of letters or hate mails etc,” said Supreme Court Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi.

The contents of the letter may still be unknown, but it had an immediate political fallout.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Samajwadi Party has been crying itself hoarse against the decision of asking for a CBI enquiry into the assets of Mulayam and his family.

"Why we will do anything that is suicidal for us? We are not on a path of confronting with judiciary," said Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

This may certainly be a serious matter. But the point to be noted is that the person who sent this letter has certainly succeeded in his attempts.
