New Delhi: As per the Chief Justice of India’s directive, the police can now question Supreme Court and high court judges on corruption charges.
The move comes after a senior judge at the apex court was recently accused of accepting gifts, allegedly bought by graft money. Currently, 11 judges of the Allahabad and Chattisgarh high courts are being investigated on similar charges. Twenty other district judges are under the scanner on the same account.
In a letter to the Ghaziabad police, the Chief Justice said:
- Judges can be personally interrogated by the police in the event of unsatisfactory preliminary investigations
- The police, however, will first have to prepare a questionnaire for the investigation
- The Chief Justice will vet the questionnaire before it can be forwarded to the judges
On February 15, 2008, an FIR was lodged with the Ghaziabad Police claiming Rs 7 crore had been siphoned off the district court treasury. The FIR said false general provided fund accounts were created and documents were forged for the scam. Several expensive items including film projectors, laptops, air conditioners were bought for the judges with the money. It was the first time that such a complaint was filed.
Earlier in 2007, former chief justice of India Y K Sabharwal was accused of corruption.
