Juices, candies, colas are almost toxic for kids

New Delhi: Colourful candies and drinks are a huge favourite with children, but a startling new finding is that the additives in them could actually affect your child's behaviour.

"These are my favourites, I love the colour and they look so cool,” says a 9-year-old. " I love drinking flavoured fuit juices," says another.

And that’s how even 10-year-old Shayne feels about his favourite chocolate.

"These are the ones I really like,” said Shayne Woodward, student.

But this could be harmful. A recent research by Southampton University suggests that the consumption of mixes of certain additives in food items like processed fruit juice, candies, ice creams and even biscuits could adversely affect your child's behaviour.

Situation becomes worse when these food items also contain sodium benzoate along with these additives, which results in your child becoming hyperactive.

Dr Nitin Verma, Sr Consultant, Max Hospital says, “Children, when they consume these things over a prolonged period of time, become aggressive, suffer from poor concentration, learning disabilities, destructive behaviour, lower IQ. All theses could be a resultant impact."

But that’s not all. Additives could also lead to diabetes, diarrhea and tooth decay. So it’s important to know what these additives are. They could be present in any form in your food such as:

  • Artificial colour retention agents
  • Acids
  • Preservatives
  • Emulsifiers
  • Stabilizers
  • Artificial flavours

“As a parent I am really concerned because we really don’t know what we are picking up from the market. But at the same time you cant stop them from having things from outside,” said Neena Woodward, a parent.

But there is a way out. Just make sure you replace such food items with home-made goodies as much as possible. It may not be easy but you need to take charge soon.
