Kudankulam: The father of India's missile programme APJ Abdul Kalam has given his stamp of approval to the controversial Kudankulam nuclear plant. Kalam visited the reactor site in Tamil Nadu and later said he was fully satisfied with the safety aspects of plant.
The Former President also clarified that he was speaking not as a government mediator but as a scientist, but the locals are not convinced. His statement comes at a time when locals have intensified their protests demanding closure of the plant.
"I am not here as a government mediator but as a scientist. I came here to talk to scientists and their team members about the two great safety systems which I saw and I am satisfied," said Kalam.
The thumbs up from Dr kalam boosting the Centre's claim that the Kudankulam nuclear plant is safe.
Anti nuclear activist Udayakumar said, "Kalam's assurance can't change anything. Kalam is saying only what PM and other officials are saying. We are not only looking at the safety aspect there are other issues as well like, where all the nuclear waste will be disposed off."
Kalam's visit comes at a time when the Centre is not leaving any stone unturned in its efforts to allay the fears of the locals. The govt has also appointed an expert committee to address the safety concerns of protesters who are on an indefinite strike for the past 19 days. But the challenge to end the deadlock still remains.
