Shimla: The historic Kalka-Shimla railway line has been declared a world heritage site by the UNESCO Heritage Committee.
With ninety-six kilometers long, 990 bends, 969 bridges, 102 tunnels and over a century of memories, the spectacular Kalka-Simla Railway, or KSR as it is known, is now a world heritage.
KSR is the second narrow gauge railway after Darjeeling railway to be conferred with this honour. And the tourism department is understandably thrilled.
“Shimla as a destination was already famous. But this will give it an international boost,” says Secretary Tourism Himachal Pradesh, Manisha Nanda.
Inaugurated on November 9 1902, KSR is an engineering marvel in itself. Over 80 per cent of the track runs through tunnels and even multi-storeyed bridges, which is rarely seen elsewhere.
Another novelty is a 104-year-old car on iron wheels and the puffer steam engine.
Transportation might have gone supersonic but for the state government, KSR remains a tourist magnet.
