Bhubaneswar: More than a hundred houses have been burnt and at least one church attacked in fresh violence at Kandhamal in Orissa. One person is reported dead and curfew is still on at most areas.
Orissa Chief Minister (CM) Navin Patnaik has demanded the Centre to send in 10 more companies of paramilitary forces.
The miscreants have fell trees across the roads to delay the security forces from reaching the spots of violence, a reason why even 20 companies of paramilitary forces have not been able to stop violence in Kandhamal.
Patnaik says, "The district administration is doing its best to bring the situation back to normal. I again appeal to all to maintain peace."
However, peace is not likely to come that easy in Kandhamal unless the Orissa government addresses the core issue faced by the tribal Kandhas who form 80 per cent of the population.
A LUCRATIVE CONVERSION
This sentiment that the Dalit Panas get double benefits after they convert to Christianity, continue to get job benefits from the government and get other benefits from the missionaries is often exploited by the Sangh Parivar by raising the larger question of conversion by inducements.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani says, "Conversion should not be banned. However there should be a democratic debate on the manner several conversions are made by inducements."
When there were reports of Center threatening to impose article 355 in Orissa, Patnaik sharply reacted by saying this was politically motivated.
However, the state CM does not have any clear answer on why he is not able to fully stop the violence at Kandhamal.
