Chennai: DMK's top leaders M Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran, TR Baalu and MK Stalin along with several party cadres on Wednesday courted arrest in Chennai during the party's state-wide jail bharo agitation against alleged witch-hunt by the Tamil Nadu government of J Jayalalithaa.
2G case accused Kanimozhi lashed out at the "vindictive politics," of the AIADMK government and alleged that her party leaders were being arrested without any proof while Stalin claimed that the agitation had been an overwhelming success.
"AIADMK is indulging vindictive politics from day one. Thew fill the jail agitation is DMK's answer to AIADMK's vendetta politics. DMK leaders are being arrested without any proof. This is not a moment for soul searching by DMK but time for soul searching by the public and the press," said Kanimozhi after her arrest.
Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP, had been earlier permitted by the Delhi special court to participate in the protest. DMK President and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi had said over 50,000 DMK cadres would take part in the protest and party leaders claimed that thousands had courted arrest across the state.
At least 15 DMK leaders and former ministers have been raided or arrested on land-grabbing and other charges since Jayalalithaa came to power in Tamil Nadu in 2011.
The DMK is organising a jail bharo agitation across Tamil Nadu. Karunanidhi had earlier reminded party cadres to abide by the party's credo of non-violence during the agitation.
