Bangalore: It can't get better than this: not only are other regional film industries taking note of sandalwood but the industry seems to have come of age and is making its mark in the global arena as well.
It’s been 160 days and still running strong: Kannada film Mungaru Male is running to full houses in all 37 centres across Karnataka.
The film is creating waves overseas in the US and Dubai as well, and now two more Kannada films will try to make an impact at the global level.
Amrithdhare and Maatadu Maatadu Mallige, both directed by Nagathhalli Chandrashekar, are going to be screened at the Madrid and Cannes film festivals respectively.
Amrithdhare released in 2005, was a super hit, completing 100 days across Karnataka, it even had Amitabh Bachchan making his debut in Kannada.
Maatadu Maatadu Mallige is still under production and its promotional DVD is going to be screened under the marketing division at the Cannes, this year.
But what's making it big is that this is the first time that Kannada films are attempting to make a mark at an international scale.
"Kannada filmmakers are very shy and there is no aggressiveness in the marketing. That is why we are very much limited ourselves to the regional market. We have to screen our films outside Karnataka, outside India. We have to capture the over seas market. I tried this attempt,” said director Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar.
The Kannada film industry is moving out of its shell and while Karnataka is shines with the BPO and software boom, regional cinema is just adding to the sheen.
