New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh on Saturday claimed that former Maharashtra ATS Chief Hemant Karkare had called him just hours before the Mumbai terror attack saying that his life was under threat.
The shocking claim by Digvijaya Singh is similar to that made by former Minorities Affairs Minister A R Antulay over the killing of Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
The Congress General Secretary claims Karkare called him just two hours before the Mumbai attack and told him that he faced threat from those who were opposed to Malegaon blast probe.
Digvijaya Singh said Karkare told him that his life was blighted by constant threats.
Karkare's widow Kavita Karkare said that she knew nothing of any such call and her husband constantly faced all sorts of threats. She objecting to his martyrdom being politicised. Kavita also said that she was thinking of leaving the country.
Meanwhile, the BJP hit back at the Congress General Secretary saying it was a diversionary tactic. "Digvijay singh raised this issue to divert attention from the the scams Congress is surrounded with," said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Prasad also slammed Digvijaya's comments saying it will embolden terrorists across the border. "His comment has given a big leverage to terrorist elements in Pakistan that a senior congress leader is questioning the killing of a police officer. His comments have emboldened the terrorists across the border," he said.
"Digvijaya Singh's comments on RSS are unfortunate. I condemn it," said Ravi Shankar Prasad.
