Karnataka Governor says he will ask CM Jagadish Shettar to prove majority

Bangalore: Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj on Friday said that he has summoned the Vidhan Sabha on February 4 and will ask Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to prove majority in the House before conducting any transaction. "I have summoned the Assembly on February 4. If I feel that his government is in minority, the first thing I will do is to ask him to prove majority before conducting any business."

The Governor's statement comes a day after 13 BJP MLAs threatened to resign from the party and join ex-party leader BS Yeddyurappa's KJP. On Wednesday, two ministers - Shobha Karandlaje and CM Udasi - who are also Yeddyurappa loyalists had resigned.

The Governor further said that he had asked his office to check the strength of the Shettar government. "I have asked my office to check records with Vidhan Sabha about the strength of the BJP government in the Assembly. If required I will ask the CM to seek a vote of confidence before any other transaction of the House."

Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj on Friday said that he has summoned the Assembly on February 4.

He further said that Shettar had sought to meet him. "The Speaker is not in city. The CM has sought time to meet me. My office will give him a time."

The ruling BJP has 118 members in the Karnataka Assembly. The Congress with 71 seats, the JDS with 26 are in the Opposition with 7 Independents.
