Karnataka govt to ban mobile phones in schools

Bangalore: After aerated drinks, the Karnataka government now proposes to ban the use of mobile phones in schools across the state.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S Horatti and Health and Family Welfare Minister R Ashok said a circular, to this effect, would be issued in a day or two.
They also appealed to the parents to discourage the use of cell phones by children at home.
The ban would be applicable to government, private and aided educational institutions. The school authorities would be empowered to seize sets, if children use it in schools.
The government says the move was prompted by a health department report that mobile usage by children below 16 could lead to memory and hearing loss.
Reasons for the ban
Government says cell phones are harmful for children’s health.
Mobile phones are a nuisance in schools.
Teachers have complained that students played with their phones, listened to music and received calls in classrooms.
All educational institutions right up to pre-university colleges would be asked to implement the ban.
The ban would also be implemented in schools affiliated to CBSE and ICSE.
