Karnataka: Officer probing site allotments attacked

New Delhi: A senior Karnataka Administrative Officer probing site allotments has been attacked on Thursday. Eyewitnesses say he was dragged out of car and hit with iron rods.

Deputy Director of Co-operative Society Audit Operation, SP Mahantesh was found lying on the road unconscious with critical head injuries. He is now in ICU at a private hospital in Bangalore. Pplice have registered a case of attempt to murder.

Mahantesh was probing the site allotment controversy of several cooperative societies.

Sources said that the incident happened near the residence of the Chief Justice of Karnataka High court. Mahantesh's family and colleagues though said they were not aware if he had any enemies.

Mahantesh's father Puttanaiah said, "I was not at home when he left the house. He is under observation. He got injured on head. According to police they suspect that he was attacked by a rod. They telephoned us, that's how we came to knów about the incident. He never had any enemies or got any threat calls. We are not suspecting anyone at the moment."

Police Commissioner Jyotiprakash Mirji said, "We have started investigating the case. We are looking into different angles and we are talking to officers and family members. A motorist has seen someone assaulting him with a rod. The CCTV footage is being looked upon. We have filed case under IPC 307."
