Karnataka planning more liquor shops

Bangalore: Liquor may soon be available in more stores across Bangalore if the Karnataka excise department has its way. It has sent a proposal to the State government to award 500 fresh licenses for liquor shops across Bangalore and a total 1000 across the state.

Khoday India Limited Director Giridhar Khoday says, “Its welcome note as far as the manufacturer is concerned. Retail people may start having issues there, they may be eating from their margin, but for the manufacturers it's a welcome move from the excise."

But retailers are complaining. They say the ratio of wine shops to people, is the highest in Karnataka when compared to other southern states. They allege that the government is just trying to make more money.

Blue Wings Employee S P Shanta Kumar says, “We are against the licenses. As it is, we are burdened with heavy tax, if the government awards fresh licenses, we will go into loss".

Government officials are mum on the issue. Public opinion is not in their favour either.

Sreedhar, advertising professional says, “This is a blatant move of the government. They will be ruining the place, its now a green Bangalore, it will become bottle Bangalore."

Its ironic, that the same government which is placing curbs on the city's night life is planning to throw open more liquor shops just to increase its revenue.
