Bangalore: Free televisions, free rice, free power: the list of freebies just does not end during elections time.

But there’s also a candidate whose election agenda includes among other things, global warming and cruelty to animals.

N L Narendra Babu, a Congress candidate and a television star, is also getting celebrities to spread his message about missing birds and dying lakes.

To bring the sparrows back to the city, Babu and his band of 'green police' are planting fruit-bearing trees, making birdbaths and inspiring residents to become volunteers in their programme called 'Parisaramitra'.

He also has an eco task force comprising ornithologists, volunteers and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palika. And as idealistic as this agenda sounds, Babu agrees it might not be as popular.

"It may not be a popular agenda or a political agenda. But, it is a priority on my list,” says Narendra Babu.

In his tenure as MLA, this bird lover has built about 40 parks in his constituency and has vowed to bring back the balance in the urban eco system.

Whether Bangalore will wake up to the chirping of birds, only time will tell. But, this unique, clean, green initiative already seems to have caught many eyeballs.
