Chennai: After Tamil titles for Tamil films, now it's Tamil in the corridors of justice as well.
Chief Minister Karunanidhi seems all set to re-assert himself as the champion of Tamil language yet again. Now, the Madras High Court will contend with the politics of language.
"Going by the Article 348 (A), the Tamil Nadu government has decided to introduce Tamil as the official language in the High Court," says Tamil Nadu Chief Minister N Karunanidhi.
While some experts feel the move will complicate procedures, others seem willing to go that extra mile, especially as they feel their clients who don't follow English will not be at a disadvantage anymore.
"In other courts like Allahabad and Chandigarh, though the language is English, the lawyers argue in Hindi. So, it's good that it's the same here and will help those from rural areas," says Vice-Chairman All India Bar Association, S Prabakaran.
A Saravanan, an advocate, agrees that the move will work: "Initially, it'll be very difficult, because all the precedents are in English, all the laws are in English. But still, if we make a conscious attempt, Tamil might help in the long run.
The government is to table a Bill seeking to introduce Tamil as an official language in the High Court in the coming Assembly session. The Bill, it hopes, will take Karunanidhi to new political heights.
The move does not seem to have met with much opposition, but what it seeks to change is a culture that is more than 50-years-old. It'll definitely be sometime before we can see any visible changes.
