New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s son M K Azhagiri was on Thursday acquitted in the Kirutinan murder case. Azhagiri was one of the accused in murder of DMK leader Kirutinan in Madurai in May 2003.

Along with Azhagiri, 12 others - Madurai Deputy Mayor PM Mannan - accused have also been acquitted.

Kirutinan was stabbed to death by unknown men on a motorbike near his Madurai residence five years ago.

Kirutinan was allegedly killed for allegedly supporting Stalin, Karunanidhi's younger son and heir to the DMK throne. It was alleged that an angry Azhagiri decided to get the minister killed during the height of rivalry between him and Stalin.

While the case was initially being heard in the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, Kirutinan's younger brother petitioned the court to transfer the case outside Tamil Nadu.

He said that Azhagiri as well as Mannan had enormous power in the city and that the trial would be biased.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh in August last year.
