Stalin useing cricket for political mileage

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's elder son MK Azhagiri organised a cricket tournament on his birthday and now his brother MK Stalin has a sports extravaganza planned for his 55th birthday.

Stalin is organising the Stalin Cup tournament on his 55th birthday on March 1. DMK leaders are not only organising cricket tournaments but also football, volleyball and kabbadi tournaments in Chennai to attract youngsters to their party.

"We have nearly 600 cricket teams, 400 for volleyball, 300 for kabbadi and football. We have to be 18 at heart and attract youth to the party," J Anbazhagan, a DMK leader, explains the logic behind organising the tournaments.

At 55 Stalin remains the not so young chief of the DMK's youth wing and only a few months ago his brother Azhagiri organised a cricket tournament in Madurai for his birthday.

Perhaps Stalin wants to do one better than the brother.

However, India's grand old party, the Congress can lay claim for patent of the big political cricket idea.

A Congress MLA had organised a tournament on Rajiv Gandhi's birthday and now even Rahul Gandhi plans a mega tournament in Amethi

"We have the youth connection because of Rahulji and I had organised a tournament to take that forward. We are happy that our allies are following our idea," Vishnu Prasad, Congress MLA, says.

Not far behind in the race for young blood, Jayalalithaa made her call for the young when she turned 60 last week, but for the moment there is no political cricket for Amma.

And Tamil Nadu's ageing politicians are hunting for young blood is because actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth's party has been attracting a whole lot of youngsters and that's worrying the not so young politicians.
