Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh University had an unusual alumnus on its campus on Wednesday, a very nostalgic Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.
This was not part of any diplomatic visit. Karzai was in Shimla to visit the university where he spent his college years. He was welcomed by a felicitation, songs were sung in his honour, and the entire event was attended by a respectably quiet crowd.
And overwhelmed by nostalgic, the Afghan President revealed several things close to his heart. Why did the President choose to study in Shimla when there was the more prestigious Delhi University? "I am a warm-blooded person, I needed a cold place."
So did he manage to find enough warmth during his stay? "For three months, I ate lots of beans and dal with labourers in a dhaba," he recalled.
But a lot has changed in 27 years. And so has Karzai's take on politics. "Oh no, without politics a man is even more complete," Karzai said in a veiled expression of frustration over the situation back home.
And his advice to the students of HP University? "The message for the students is that if you do well in your studies, you can become a President!"
It was finally time for Karzai to end the ride down memory lane. And he ended it on a very philosophical note. "Dil dhoondta hai, fursat key woh raat din. (the heart longs for days gone by when we used to be free and had no obligation...). That is what I am seeking now," Karzai revealed.
