Mumbai: The trial of Mohd Ajmal Kasab in the November 26 terrorist attack case finally started on Friday amid high drama. After his lawyer got sacked on Thursday, the confessions of the lone captured terrorist in Mumbai attack made the case even more dramatic.
It was always suspected that Kasab and his associate couldn't have got the commando-like training without the help of Pakistani military.
On Friday, in a special court hearing the November 26 terror attack case, those suspicions were confirmed when Kasab started spilling the beans, making startling revelations.
The confession he made to the police was read out in court on Friday. The confession links the attack directly to the Pakistani army. Kasab told the police that he was trained by a Major General in the Pakistan Army and was taught Marine warfare, Operating GPS and Navigation
He and his fellow terrorists were also trained to mislead Indian Maritime agencies on way to India via the sea route and to collecting intelligence
Kasab has told the police that the terrorists were instructed to kill US, Israeli and British nationals and to avoid killing people of a particular minority community.
Kasab claimed he was told to randomly target people at CST station. He also claimed he was the best shooter in the group and that the trainer was impressed with his gun skills
But in a dramatic turn of events, Kasab told the court that he wanted to retract his confession. “He said he was physically tortured in police custody,” says his lawyer Abbas Kazmi.
However, the prosecution has taken the case further and he has been charged with waging a war on India. “26/11 Mumbai attack was a war waged by Lashkar-e-toiba to occupy to capture J-K,” says Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.
Coupled with a large body of evidence and for many legal experts 26/11 seems an open and shut case.
