Srinagar: The autumn sun losing its vigour, the tall chinar trees looking bare with their green leaves turning reddish brown and Kangri’s and woolen jackets being up for grabs, all suggest that winter is here and it is time to prepare for a long cold season.
“I am not shopping in panic. I am trying to buy a warm and cozy jacket. Winters are long and people spend most of the time indoors,” says a shopper, Yousuf Hamdani.
“I am buying clothes for the winters as the cost of winter clothing spirals quickly. I am grabbing a few from here otherwise I shall have to spend extra money,'' adds another shopper, Eijaz Bhat.
Winter in Kashmir is harsh with mercury dipping as low as minus 10 by December and January and the Kashmiris are bracing themselves for it.
However, there is always that first nip of November that comes almost as a warning. And it has already started snowing in some parts of Kashmir.
The Dal Lake froze for two weeks last year. This year too, the weather pundits say that there might not be much difference in the temperatures.
“The temperatures have dipped as it snowed in the higher reaches and that is why we are experiencing this chill. The western disturbances also have a role for cooler climate in Kashmir,” says Director, Metrological Department, Srinagar, LC Ram.
