Srinagar: There are many things unique to Kashmir, often called the Paradise on Earth. But perhaps the most enchanting of all are the houseboats, a colonial contribution but now moulded as a perfect synthesis of east and west.
Made of Cedar wood, the mesmerising houseboats of Kashmir are complete with stately living quarters and drawing and dining rooms. A legacy from the times of British rule, they remain major tourist attractions.
The owners say that it's the hunger for the unique that drives people to these houseboats.
"Most of the tourists who come to Kashmir prefer to stay on a houseboat because it’s a different experience," said houseboat owner Ghulam Mohammad Butt.
Musician George Harrison of the Beatles' group, the erstwhile US Vice-President Nelson Rockefeller, Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and writer Arundhati Roy are some of the many famous names in the long list of guests, who describe it as another worldly experience.
"Oh its wonderful, tranquility all you hear are the birds in the morning. Its just so different and the going back in time with the paneling its just wonderful. There is no word to describe it – it’s just walking into another world," said Bill Adams, a tourist.
