New Delhi: Five people including a Hurriyat leader Sheikh Aziz were killed, and more than 120 injured in violence after security forces barred fruit growers from trying to cross the Line of Control (LoC).
Security forces cracked down on the fruit growers marching to PoK. Scores were arrested or detained and fruit mandis (small markets) were sealed. The firings sparked off further incidents of violence.
“Death of Sheikh Aziz is a big blow. It will throw things off track. People were agitating the economic blockade. It is unfortunate that brutal force was used against them,” says Chairman Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
Earlier fruit growers backed by the Hurriyat Conference and the PDP proceeded along the Uri -Muzaffarabad road in their attempt to cross the LoC. The plan was to take their produce to Muzaffarabad and then reach the Indian cities through the Wagah border. However, the security forces prevented the attempt.
“We had kept some trucks to be loaded and sent today. However, the police came and took away the trucks with the fruits,” says President, Srinagar Fruit Grower Association, Bashir Ahmed.
Curfew has been imposed in Srinagar and along the LoC in Baramulla to contain the violence. However, with the fruit growers in no mood to give up their attempt to cross the LoC, it seems that the Valley is bracing for more violence in the coming days.
