Kataras hopeful after Bharti's arrival

New Delhi: On February 16, 2002, Nitish Katara, son of an IAS officer and a graduate from the Institute of Management and Technology, Ghaziabad went missing from a friend's wedding. His burnt body was found later.

When Nitish had gone missing, Bharti Yadav allegedly sent an e-mail to Nitish's brother. She wrote she was suspicious her brother Vikas and father D P Yadav were involved in Nitish's disappearance.

Later, in her statement to the police, Bharti again said her brother Vikas and cousin Vishal could be involved in Nitish's murder. She also said at her friend Shivani Gaur's wedding in Ghaziabad - where Nitish was last seen alive - someone had told her he'd left the function and that her brother Vikas had been seen in the vicinity.

Soon after that incident, Bharti left India for London. The prosecution has been trying to get her to testify ever since. There have been 16 summons, bailable and non-bailable warrants that have been issued against her, but there was no response. When Bharti's passport was revoked earlier this year, she pleaded to be allowed to testify via video-conferencing. But that plea was refused.

It was the threat of being declared a proclaimed offender that got Bharti to assure the trial court that she would arrive in India to testify. Now, if she sticks to the statement she had given the police, it would be a major victory for the prosecution. Bharti's testimony, which is to begin on November 29, will continue on a day-to-day basis.

Meanwhile, Nitish Katara’s mother Neelam Katara who has been fighting for justice for the murder of her son was hopeful with the arrival of Bharti Yadav on Friday evening.

“It's good that she's back. A lot of time has been wasted which should not have happened. I hope she will speak the truth and the case will reach its conclusion,” she said.
