Avoid Dalai Lama function, Govt tells cabinet

New Delhi: In a move aimed at appeasing China, the Centre has advised all cabinet ministers to stay away from an event to felicitate the Dalai Lama in Delhi on Saturday.

In a letter to all ministers, Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar said, "The function is not in conformity with the foreign policy of the Government. And therefore you are directed not to accept the invitation."

The function has been organised by the Gandhi Peace Foundation and the All Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet post the Dalai Lama's return from the US.

The Dalai Lama had recently visited America, where he received the Congressional gold medal, the highest civilian award bestowed by the US, much to the chagrin of China, which unleashed a tirade at the US over His Holiness' warm reception in Washington.
