Kannur: Kerala police has arrested Bitti Mohanty, son of former Odisha DGP BB Mohanty in Kannur, Kerala. Bitti was convicted of raping a German tourist in 2006 and has been absconding since 2006 when he jumped parole.
Kerala Police is questioning Bitti at the moment and has informed Rajasthan Police about the arrest. Bitti will be produced in court later in the day.
Bitti, working with State Bank of Travancore since June 2012, was arrested on Friday evening. Bitti was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raping the German national in Alwar, Rajasthan.
Sources said that before Kannur, Bitti was hiding in Andhra Pradesh. Bitti had reportedly changed his identity and was using alias Raghav Rajan.
SP Kannur Rahul R Nair had earlier refused to commit if the arrested person was Bitti, has now confirmed the news. Nair had said, "Bitti's identity is yet to be ascertained. We have arrested a person by the name of Raghav Rajan. The man arrested has been held in a case of impersonation. The actual identity will be ascertained by Rajasthan Police. He was arrested after a complaint from bank officials.
Biti's father, former DGP BB Mohanty was suspended for allegedly helping his son jump parole, only to be reinstated mysteriously by the Odisha government in May 2009. A year later he retired with all benefits - maintaining that his escaped son might be dead. He had said in 2009, "When we are going through so much of suffering and he is still not coming back, there is every reason that he might be dead."
