Trivandrum The festival of Janmasthami was celebrated in Kerala on Saturday, a day before it is celebrated most parts of the country.

Every year, Janamashtami is ushered in Kerala a day before the rest of the country, with hundreds of children dressing up like Lord Krishna and Radha.

The fervour of the celebrations can be felt the most at the famous Guruvayoor Lord Krishna Temple in Thrissur district of God's own country.

10-year-old Shyama has been waiting for the moment to dress up like Krishna's Radha.

“We have already started feeling the presence of Krishna and Radha in the temple town of Guruvayoor. It’s a tradition we can’t do without. Children come to us asking to dress them up as Krishna or Radha and Kuchela, which is perhaps the best way to remember Lord Krishna,” says mother of Shyama, Valsala.

Roads turn into a sea of colours as hundreds of devotees walk to the temple. Children try to break handis like once Lord Krishna did, much like what happens in the rest of the country.

However, there is a difference in how Krishna is worshipped here.

“There is lot of difference between how Krishna is worshipped in the south and north of the country. Here the lord is one among you, doing all that you and me are doing. But in north India, it is more of spiritual and devotional,” says Director of Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, Dr Gopalakrishnan.

However, after a day's celebrations and rituals, Janmashtami ends with the traditional procession celebrating Krishna.
