Kerala CM's secretaries in a war of words

Thiruvanathapuram: From a chief minister who came to power riding on a huge popular mandate of the people, VS Achuthanandan today cuts a sorry figure in Kerala.

While his own secretaries have questioned his functioning, the opposite camp in the CPM is gearing up to bring him down.

It's troubled times for Kerala's CM who rose to power on a popularity wave unmatched in the state.

But recurring controversies took their toll on Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, the latest being an open war between top bureaucrats in his own office.

Achuthanandan has been forced to sack one of his trusted lieutenants, Additional Secretary Suresh Kumar, after he spoke out against other officials in the CM's office.

"A number of files at the Chief Minister's office were swept under the carpet by his own private secretary and as far as I know the CM was not aware of it," said Suresh Kumar.

His outburst was directed at Achuthanandan's private secretary Rajendran. A CPM appointee, Rajendran had allegedly complained to the party state committee that the CM was not listening to him and was taking crucial decisions at the behest of a coccus group. A gleeful opposition is now on the offensive.

"The chief minister has lost the moral authority to continue as the chief minister of the state. His own private secretary is complaining about his malfunctioning, he is alleging that the CM is playing into the hands of a mafia," said Ramesh Chennithala, the President of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.

The fresh controversy comes even as the CM is under fire his comments against the family of slain NSG commando Sandeep Unnikrishnan

Every time he gets into a controversy, VS Achuthanandan has somehow managed to stage a come back.

But this time around, his own party men are all set to make sure it doesn't happen. Should the party get a thrashing in the next Lok Sabha elections, it might well mean curtains for one of CPM's oldest comrades.
