Kerala CM not alone in insulting bravehearts

New Delhi: Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan is feeling the heat with his controversial statement on slain NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's father drawing criticism from all quarters.

His party, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has issued an apology, but Achuthanandan is in no mood to say sorry.

On the streets of Thiruvananthapuram, Achuthanandan is now being lampooned for his remarks denigrating the family of the slain NSG commando Unnikrishnan.

Achuthanandan had heaped scorn on the family saying, "If it wasn't for the Major, even a dog would not have glanced their way."

The Kerala Chief Minister's remarks came after he was turned away by the late Major's father K Unnikrishnan who was angry that Achuthanadan only chose to come by after the media critisiced him for not bothering to turn up for the officer's funeral.

Following Achuthanandan's insensitive and disparaging remarks, there is anger against politicians on the streets of Kerala too.

"The Chief Minister of Kerala should not have made such derogatory remarks," said a protestor while another demanded that Achuthanandan should apologise to Major Sandeep's family.

"We didn't expect such a statement form the Chief Minister of Kerala," another protestor said.

However, the Chief Minister has refused to apologise, choosing instead to take the politicians much abused route of clarifications.

"I did not comment any thing wrong. His wife and relatives told me his mental (status) is not good," said an unrepentant Achuthanandan.

But his party, embarrassed by his insensitive comments, has expressed regret.

"Certain remarks made by VS Achuthanandan are regrettable. I have spoken to him over phone. He said he had no other intention but to go to the home of Sandeep unnikrishnan who was killed, to pay homage and condole with the family," said CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, fellow politicians called for the Kerala CM's head.

"I will demand from the CPI-M leadership to sack the Kerala Chief Minister," said Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.

But Achuthanandan isn't the only political leader displaying the foot-in-mouth syndrome.

Former Home Minister of Maharashtra, RR Patil, had to pay with his job for saying the attack on Mumbai was a small thing.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, on Monday, came up with a gem equating people protesting against politicians as terrorists.

Earlier Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had offered money to the widow of slain Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare whom he had branded a villain just a few days ago or an Amar Singh doing much the same in the case Delhi Police Inspector RC Sharma.ow the message is yeh public hai yeh sab jaani hain (The public knows everything) even as our politicians seems to be losing the capacity to be compassionate.
