Thiruvananthapuram: Police in Kerala have been armed with a gizmo to go one up on traffic offenders, a blackberry!
All they now need to do is just type in the vehicle registration or license number of a traffic offender and the phone will access his entire crime record from the transport office server and then even cut his chalan.
Each phone would cost around Rs 15,000. The software was developed by the Centre for Development in Advanced Computing.
This blackberry drive is part of a Rs 20-crore project to modernise the state police force. Some vehicle owners are impressed.
A driver Haridas says, “I am sure this will decrease vehicle theft and also from now on our people will obey traffic rules in a better way.”
However, others do not see much into.
Another driver Muthukumar said, " The roads here are terrible. They (police) can't do anything for that but are keen to find ways to collect money from the public."
At present, the blackberrys have been introduced in Kochi, but soon cops in other districts would be flaunting one too.
