New Delhi: The crisis ridden Malayalam film industry has finally split into two. Some of the top actors and directors have broken away from the parent body, MACTA , and formed a new organisation.
The MACTA or Malayalam Cine Technicians Association is the apex body of all the 19 trade unions in the industry.
The crisis was sparked off when one of the top actors Dileep reportedly refused to do a film with director Thulasidas after taking an advance.
Workers of the new organisation got together in Kochi for the announcement of the new organisation that has the support of big Malayalam stars like Mohanlal and Mammootty.
Malayalam film star Mohanlal who announced the decision said, that this new organization has become a necessity and will take the industry to greater heights.
"We are forming and we are declaring the formation of a new trade union in the industry with representation from all the sectors and all the trades of the industry. We are for the industry and we want the industry to go ahead," says director and script writer Ranji Paniker.
The adhoc committee headed by director Siddique has been given three weeks' time to formally launch the organisation.
For the past two weeks, Kerala's film industry has been in a flux after a feud between leading technicians' organisation, MACTA and Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA).
Thulasidas has alleged that Dileep, after taking a payment of Rs 4 million — four years back for a film — withdrew from the project, following a string of flops by the director.
The MACTA has said the actor should work for the director while the AMMA is reportedly supporting Dileep.
