Sabarimala: Kerala govt files affidavit

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Left Front government in Kerala, headed by VS Achuthanandan, on Friday, filed an affidavit in the High Court on the Sabarimala tragedy that happened last week.

In its affidavit, the government said that it will bring into effect a permanent system to ensure the safety of the pilgrims. The Left Front government has also promised to ensure better crowd management practice be put into place.

Crime Branch investigations are yet to reveal the cause of the January 14 stampede in which 102 pilgrims lost their lives, during the Makara Jyoti ritual, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Earlier, the state police, the forest department and the Dewaswom Board had filed different reports before a bench of the Kerala High Court, each blaming the other for the tragedy.

The Dewaswom Board said that there were not enough police or forest personnel to manage the huge crowd. The board also said that it does not have the permission to set up facilities in the area.

The forest department said only 50 policemen were at the spot. It said that an altercation between the pilgrims and the jeep and auto drivers triggered the stampede.

But police claim there were 279 policemen in the entire Pullumedu area. The police in its report said they did not have permission to make specific policing arrangements because the area falls within a tiger reserve.
