Thiruvananthapuram: It's finally a clean-up time at the Sree Avittam Tirunal (SAT) Government hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

After a government probe was ordered into 38 infant deaths reported in the hospital since January, a cleanliness drive has been launched.

The drive will be supervised by a control room headed by experts from the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

“We now have a daily inspection routine and weekly reports with proper documentation. We have also employed more staff for cleaning up on daily wages,” says State Mission Director, NRHM, Dr Dinesh Arora.

The hospital is also trying to regulate entry of visitors. Not more than one person will be allowed to accompany a patient inside the hospital. Visitors will now be allowed in only between 1600 hrs IST and 1800 hrs IST. And at other times only by a special pass issued on payment.

But unfortunately the price is too high for the hospital's poorer patients.

“We are very poor people and we come to a government hospital because of lesser costs. It’s a tragedy that they are increasing the cost by introducing passes just like private hospitals. In fact I think this is done to help private hospitals only,” says a patient by-stander, Biju.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities are yet to identify a new space for the isolation ward of the neonatal intensive care unit. A nursery will also be set up for admitting cases from the wards.

BABY DOOM HOSPITAL
bulletIANS reported that the babies may have died because of infection caused by klebsiella bacteria that live in unhygienic conditions.
bullet Hospital's superintendent had been removed for not informing the government about deaths.
bullet SAT is attached to the Medical College Hospital, where teachers' association blames the government for the poor infrastructure.
bullet Association says SAT staff overstretched, can’t handle around 60 births daily.
bullet Government had appointed a five-member panel of senior doctors to submit a report in three weeks.
bullet A normal delivery at the hospital costs around Rs 3,000 and in private hospitals over Rs 12,000.
