Thiruvananthapuram: Rape convict Bitti Mohanty was on Monday sent to 10-day police custody after being produced at a local court in Kannur, Kerala. Bitti was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on charges of raping a German tourist whom he had befriended in 2005, in Alwar, Rajasthan. However, he jumped parole in 2006 and was on the run for seven years. On Saturday, the rape convict was arrested in Kerala.

The police said that during the seven years, Bitti had managed to complete his MBA and find a job at the State Bank of Travancore in Madayi, Kannur. The bank where he was working reportedly received a anonymous letter that tipped it off about Bitti. The bank informed the police afterwards.

Meanwhile, the father of Bitti, former Odisha Police DG, has refused to identify him, saying the person arrested from Kerala is not his son.

A team of the Rajasthan Police has reached Kerala and will seek Bitti's custody.
