Thiruvananthapuram: A 14-year-old student Nabala no longer goes to school. Her father, a local Imam, alleges her school threw her out because she used to wear a scarf. Nabala was a student of the Believers Church English Medium School in Kerala's Alappuzha district. Indeed the transfer certificate issued when she was allegedly expelled clearly states "A head scarf is not allowed in school".

Nabala's father TN Nazeer said: "I am absolutely shocked. She is in ninth standard now. She has to write board exams next year. Where will I take her? School principal was not even ready to listen to us. She just told we cannot have her in school because she still wears the scarf."

The school is run by a Christian missionary body called Believers Church. Since the school comes under the Central Board of Secondary Education the state education department seems hesitant to take action. But the Left government has promised a probe.

State Education Minister M A Baby says: "It's a CBSE school and the matter needs attention from the Central board. We have also decided to conduct a departmental enquiry into the matter. This cannot be allowed in any school."

Meanwhile the school has gone into damage control mode. While they refused to comment on camera, it now claims it was Nabala's father, who insisted on discontinuing her schooling. It's now even willing to take her back.
