Kerala: It's celebration time in God's Own Country, as on the occasion of Thir-Onam Malyalees across the state gear up to welcome their former king Mahabali with a king-sized feast.
Irrespective of age and religion, the festival revellers dress up to greet their king.
"We live here as a family — we have Hindus, Christians and Muslims. We meet very often, especially during such holiday seasons. We celebrate Onam and Christmas," V Thomas Mathew, a Mahabali devotee, says.
There are many colourful features of Onam celebrations, like the floral decorations called the 'Pookalam' and the 'Oonjal' (swing).
But the best part is the traditional Ona Sadhya (Onam feast), a sumptuous meal with not less than 20-25 side dishes, which includes the mouth-watering traditional Kerala dessert — payasam.
"The most important part of the Sadhya is obviously the payasam. You can make more than one kind of payasam. You can make it with milk or jaggery. Then all traditional curries also go into making it," another devotee, Sarla Krishnakumar, says.
Tradition demands that Malyalees celebrate Onam irrespective of the costs involved. Even with rains and inflation threatening to dampen the festivities, surely the Malyalees have been celebrating big this time as well.
