Thiruvananthapuram: In Nagesh Kukunoor's film Dor, the protagonist begs the widow of a man who her husband had accidentally murdered to save her own husband from execution.
Now, life has imitated art. In a story that highlights the power of human forgiveness, a Malayalee construction worker in Kuwait is saved from the gallows after the widow of the man he had murdered granted him a pardon.
On November 17, a group of Indian construction workers were playing a friendly cricket match on the outskirts of Kuwait city when a scuffle broke out at the end of the match and Ambati Devi's husband Suresh was accidentally killed by his neighbour, Simil in the fight.
According to Kuwaiti law, Simil would have been put to death last week. But now Simil's life has been saved by a widow's forgiveness.
"They came here seeking pardon. We are ready to pardon. I have small kids. The government should do something for them," the victim's wife Ambati Devi says.
Ambati Devi has no means to look after her little ones now. And for a while, there was tension between the families. But an offer of cash compensation has helped them tide over the loss somewhat.
Simil's family has agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh to Ambati Devi. Another Rs 15 lakh has come as contributions from Kuwait. The children will never know their father and Ambati Devi will never see her husband again.
But sometimes, even from the deepest grief, there comes a heart-warming act of human forgiveness. "They begged for mercy. What to do? We are also too poor. My son was the sole bread winner. I hope the government will do something for my grandchildren," Suresh's mother Narayanamma states.
