Thiruvananthapuram: An IT professional was allegedly abused by a group of men in Kochi for being out with a male friend late at night. Tasnibanu, the 32-year-old IT professional, was angry after the initial shock over the Sunday night's attack on her and her male friend.

The group of men allegedly hurled abuses at the duo, and when Tasni reacted, they did not spare her and slapped her on the neck and face.

"I was going to office for my night shift. I had asked one of a male friend to drop me as I had missed my office cab and it was not safe for me to take a public transport at that odd hour," said Tasnibanu.

The police have registered a complaint in the case and promises quick action. But for thousands of women it's a rude wake up call.

"What is the use in Kerala being a fully literate state...this cannot be tolerated...strict action should be taken," said a woman.

"I am very concerned about this," said another woman.

The Kerala Women's Commission has taken note of the incident and said that they will intervene if the police delays action. The women in the state are anxious about their safety but they strongly feel that the self proclaimed watchdogs of society should be shown their place.
